Benjamin Schäffner is a project manager in CREAVIS – Science to Business, the strategic research center of Evonik Industries AG. As an organic chemist, he is involved in projects with the focus on the synthesis of new organic compounds. In addition to the chemical feasibility of his projects, he also analyzes potential end-user markets and the ecological impact of the new reactions compared to existing benchmarks.
He received his Ph.D. at the University of Rostock (Leibniz-Institute for Catalysis e.V.) for his work in the field of organic carbonates in 2009 and completed a postdoctoral stay at the Stanford University in the USA before joining the Creavis in 2011.
In his projects, CO2 is used as a valuable C1-source to attach additional functionalities to molecules. Since such functionalities cannot be simply obtained by alternative routes, the use of CO2 is a unique feature to shortcut traditional synthetic routes. Especially carbonates and carboxylic acids are within his focus. The research is driven by the final applications and supported by life-cycle analyses.
