SESSION 3, CO2 to polymers and chemicals
Sustainable development and climate protection has become a top topic nowadays. Using CO2 for polymers opens up the way for sustainable development as it helps to save on fossil raw materials to build up polymers simply by using CO2 as a building block instead. These polymers also help to bind a certain amount of CO2 otherwise released into the atmosphere.
Dream Production – within this project, scientists of Bayer MaterialScience and Bayer Technology Services cooperate with energy provider RWE Power AG as well as RWTH Aachen University as academic partner to realize a sustainable usage of carbon dioxide as a C1-building block. The project consortium pictures the value chain of CO2-utilization in a very unique way – from source to product.
The project is devoted to the production of so called polyether polycarbonate polyols, a building block that can be used for polyurethane materials. First trials of these materials show that these materials can be made out of the new polyols and that they are sustainable materials in a way that they help to reduce CO2 emissions by insulation e.g. of buildings.
