GreenPolTM: CO2 – Embedded Polymer

GreenPol is a polyalkylene carbonate and a CO2-embedded polymer synthesizable by direct reaction of CO2 and epoxide in the presence of specific (highly active and efficient) catalyst. It is amorphous polymer made by alternating copolymerization. More than 40% of GreenPol is made from CO2, one of the major greenhouse gases.

Major advantages of GreenPol are its sustainability since it utilizes CO2 to valuable materials and introducing the totally new type of material. Whole production process shows the lowest CO2 emission level when compared with processes to manufacture conventional commodity polymers, and polymer itself is also an eco-friendly material with various useful properties: clean burning, high barrier properties to O2 and H2O, enzyme degradability, excellent transparency/printability/adherence, etc. Thanks to these properties, this polymer is applicable to various fields: insulating/shock absorbing materials, upholstery, packaging sheets/films, adhesives, coatings, etc.

SK Innovation has introduced its proprietary polyalkylene carbonate technology, with trade name GreenPol, which includes its own catalyst, process technology and product application package. We have been trying to scale up GreenPol technology in commercial size based on its world-best catalyst and process technology as well as to expand the spectrum for application and market of GreenPol products.
