Conversion of CO2 for coating applications
Novomer’s proprietary catalyst technology enables the use of CO2 as a raw material for the synthesis of aliphatic polycarbonate based polymers. The CO2 is directly incorporated into the structure of the polymer by co-polymerization with epoxides (e.g. PO), providing up to 43 percent of the materials’ mass.
Since polycarbonate resins are widely known because of their superior performance and resistances, DSM is converting this novel type of polymers into resins and formulate them for target applications such as coatings.
When synthesizing polymers for coatings applications, the tunable catalyst system allows for a high degree of control over the molecular weight, molecular weight distribution and functionality. Such control produces polymers for a diverse range of applications.
